How to double the lifetime of a lithium battery?

I am going to give you some advice to increase the lifetime of lithium batteries.

First point: the temperature of batteries.

Lithium batteries don’t like heat and cold, there are just like us. The recommended operating range is between 10 and 30 °C. If the temperature is excessive, it will degrade the electrochemistry of batteries while cold will reduce the usable capacity.

Second point: storage.

Storage is often overlooked. I recommend storing batteries with a charge level (SOC) between 25 and 50 % of capacity and a 0 to 25 °C maximum temperature. It will allow you to preserve the capacity of your battery.

Last point: the operating range.

In most applications including lithium batteries, the charge is 100 % completed and discharge goes down to 0 %. I recommend you to use the battery between 10 and 90 % of the charge level. This way, you are going to lose only 20 % of the usable capacity but it will allow you to double the lifetime of your battery. As an example, for a battery with a NMC lithium technology (Nickel, Manganese, Cobalt), its use in the standard range will provide you up to 500 lifecycles. By reducing this range to 10 to 90 %, we can reach up to 1000 lifecycles.

Thank you for your attention, see you next week for a new video.
